Korean battery maker Samsung SDI is considering possible expansion of its European manufacturing site located in Hungary. The production facility supplies prismatic batteries for Hyundai and Kia’s European electric vehicles (EVs).

According to specialized Korean press sources, Samsung SDI had previously announced its intention to expand the second one, using funds raised through a capital increase. Apparently, the company will receive 1.65 trillion won in new capital on May 30. Of this amount, 323.6 billion won will be invested in the Hungarian facility to significantly enhance its production capabilities.

Samsung to further invest in Hungary

The overall investment made by Samsung for its core European factory have been over 2 trillion won so far, with a capacity that currently overcomes 40 GWh per year. According to Business Korea, “Samsung SDI currently produces two versions of prismatic batteries at the Hungarian factory. The first factory uses a winding method where electrode materials are rolled and inserted into cans, while the second factory produces batteries using a stacking method where materials are layered. New supply contracts are primarily focused on stacked batteries, which have higher energy density”.
