Cummins to manufacture Accelera LFP batteries in Spain
Cummins is expanding its battery manufacturing footprint in Europe, with its Accelera zero-emission business planning production of Advanced LFP batteries in Spain. Announced at IAA Transportation 2026, the move will bring the company's modular battery platform closer to European truck and commercial vehicle manufacturers.
Cummins is planning to expand its battery manufacturing activities in Europe, with Accelera by Cummins set to manufacture its Advanced LFP battery platform in Spain.
According to Cummins, the new Spanish operation will manufacture its modular lithium iron phosphate (LFP) battery platform, developed specifically around the requirements of heavy-duty commercial vehicles.
The move is intended to strengthen Accelera’s European manufacturing footprint and provide more local support to vehicle manufacturers as demand for battery-electric trucks and other commercial vehicles grows.
“We’re seeing growing demand for battery-electric solutions in the European commercial vehicle market, and our customers are looking for partners who can help them scale with confidence,” said Amy Davis, President of Accelera and Components, during the press conference held at IAA. “Manufacturing in Spain strengthens our ability to support customers locally, while positioning us for long-term growth in the region.”
A modular LFP platform for commercial vehicles
The Advanced LFP platform uses a modular architecture intended to accommodate different vehicle configurations and duty cycles.
The system is based around 102 kWh battery packs operating at up to 840 volts, with different form factors available depending on packaging requirements. The batteries use a cell-to-pack architecture, eliminating the conventional module level.
Accelera has previously stated that its latest LFP packs can reach an energy density of around 165 Wh/kg, compared with approximately 145 Wh/kg for older LFP technology. The company sees LFP chemistry as offering advantages in terms of safety, cycle life and total cost of ownership for commercial vehicle applications.
The Spanish manufacturing plans build on a battery roadmap that Cummins had already started to outline in Europe. At Busworld Europe 2025, Accelera confirmed that European production was planned for part of its new LFP battery family, with market introduction expected from 2028.
Cummins has not yet disclosed the exact location of the Spanish operation, its production capacity, investment value or start-of-production date. It is also not yet clear whether the site will manufacture battery cells or focus on pack production and assembly.
