Einride and Lidl expand electric freight operations in Sweden to 832,000 km a year
Einride is expanding its electric freight operations for Lidl in Sweden, increasing annual electric mileage from 474,000 to 832,000 kilometers. The partnership, active since 2020 in Stockholm, will now cover longer-haul routes across several regions of central Sweden through Einride's Freight Capacity-as-a-Service model.
Einride and Lidl are significantly expanding their electric freight operations in Sweden. Under a new agreement, the annual distance covered by electric trucks operated by Einride on behalf of the retailer will increase from 474,000 to 832,000 kilometers, an increase of around 75%.
More importantly, the expansion also changes the operational scope of the project. The two companies have worked together on electric transport in the Stockholm area since 2020; the new phase will extend operations to longer-haul transport serving Värmland, Östergötland, Mälardalen, Dalarna and parts of Västergötland and Småland.
From urban distribution to longer electric routes
The partnership is based on Einride’s Freight Capacity-as-a-Service (FCaaS) model. Rather than simply supplying vehicles, Einride combines electric trucks and charging infrastructure with its Saga AI planning and optimization platform, which is used to manage transport demand, vehicle utilization and energy consumption.
The Swedish company has not disclosed how many electric trucks will be involved in the expanded Lidl operations, nor the models that will be used. The mileage increase nevertheless provides an indication of the scale-up: the additional routes will bring annual electric operations to more than 830,000 kilometers.
According to Rasmus Laursen, Head of Logistics at Lidl Sweden, the experience gained since the beginning of the partnership has shown that electric transport can be both operationally efficient and cost-competitive. The retailer is therefore extending the same operating model to additional regions.
Electric trucks move towards longer-haul applications
For Einride, the agreement is also intended to demonstrate that electric road freight is moving beyond pilot projects and limited urban applications. The company increasingly bases its proposition on the integration of vehicles, charging and software rather than on the electric truck alone.
The Lidl expansion is particularly relevant in this respect: an operation originally concentrated around Stockholm is now being extended to longer distances and a substantially larger annual mileage, providing another example of how battery-electric trucks are gradually entering more demanding freight applications in Northern Europe.
