E.ON Drive Infrastructure Italy has been recently awarded by the local authority Autostrade per l’Italia (ASPI) three lots to build an ultra-fast charging network along Italy’s main motorway corridors. According to the project, 18 charging hubs for electric vehicles with over 100 high-power charging points will be built by the end of this year.

The hubs will be located “along the country’s busiest east-west and north-south corridors, including the A4 (Turin-Trieste) and A14 (Bologna-Taranto) motorways,” as specified by E.ON. In addition to the charging stations, the operator also plans to build the necessary systems to store energy and make it available at peak times. Solar panels will also be installed, with the latter made necessary to reduce the need to use the grid to obtain the energy required for charging electric vehicles.

E.ON charging hubs will rely on Alpitronic 400kW chargers

More into details, E.ON stations will host between four and eight Alpitronic HYC400 charging points, capable of delivering up to 400 kW of power per charging point. This configuration allows drivers to add over 200 km of range in 15–25 minutes during a normal motorway stop.

The competitive procedure launched by ASPI “is part of a broader program that involves the installation of charging infrastructure in 60 service areas, in line with the AFIR requirements for one fast charging point every 60 km on the trans-European transport network,” E.ON specified.
