Chinese manufacturer BYD is getting serious in Italy, also in the light commercial vehicle segment. In the last few weeks, the brand appointed former Stellantis and Maxus manager, Gianluca Zampese, as country manager in the LCV sector. In addition, BYD has recently joined UNRAE, the association that gathers together foreign manufacturers working in Italy.

BYD eTP3 leads the e-van market in Italy

Perhaps the most significant news, however, although it has gone virtually unnoticed, comes from the market and van registration data compiled by ANFIA, another primary association, namely the Italian branch of ACEA. In the first 5 months of the current year, in fact, BYD is the market leader by detachment in Italy in the sale of electric vans. The data speak of 687 vans registered, for a market share of just over 24 percent. Needless to say, until last year BYD had not registered a single van in Italy. To give an idea, Ford, FIAT Professional and Toyota follow with market shares around 10 percent.

According to the official data, the ‘credit’ goes to the eTP3, a low-cost electric van from the Chinese Brand (price for Italy is around 14 thousand euros) with a GVW of 2.4 tons, payload of 780 kilos and wheelbase of 2,725 millimeters. Thanks to a 45 kWh capacity battery pack, the BYD eTP3 boasts 233 km of mixed-cycle range, rising to 270 in an urban context. It also fast charges up to 50 kW of power.
