The joint venture formed by Volvo and Westport Fuel Systems, and announced a few months ago, has now an official name. During IAA Transportation 2024, the companies made public the name Cespira. The new company’s strategy focuses on expanding access to high pressure direct injection, or the patented HPDI fuel system technology, by overcoming barriers to its adoption.

Indeed, the system enables internal combustion engines to operate with carbon neutral or fossil free fuels such as bio, e-fuels, or green hydrogen, without compromising performance and efficiency. All without significant changes to the existing powertrain. Volvo aims to exploit the opportunities offered by the new JV to develop and test its trucks equipped with hydrogen-powered internal combustion engine.

Already today, HPDI fuel system technology offers substantial CO2 reductions for long-haul trucking and demanding off-road uses. Now vehicles running on fossil fuels, such as diesel, can be replaced with carbon neutral or fossil free fuels such as bio, e-fuels, or green hydrogen without compromising performance.

The first official statements about the creation of Cespira

“The launch of Cespira manifests our joint venture with Westport Fuel Systems. The HPDI technology is important for decarbonization, offering immediate reductions in greenhouse gas emissions while utilizing existing internal combustion engines. This can be achieved today with biogas and natural gas, and we foresee exciting possibilities with hydrogen. With Cespira, we are well-positioned to continue leading the industry toward a more sustainable future and we look forward to seeing other OEMs explore this technology,” commented Lars Stenqvist, CTO Volvo Group.

“The name Cespira—combining ‘espira,’ meaning ‘breathe out,’ with ‘C’ for ‘clean’—perfectly embodies our mission and vision,” added Dan Sceli, nominated CEO of Cespira. “The turquoise symbol above the ‘i’ in Cespira’s logo is more than just a design choice; it represents our collaboration with Volvo Group and Westport, the integration of established technologies with cutting-edge clean fuel solutions, and the molecular structure of hydrogen, which is central to our mission”.
