PragmaCharge and Prologis open electric truck charging hub in Valencia

PragmaCharge and Prologis have launched operations at a new electric heavy-duty truck charging hub at MercaValencia, near the Port of Valencia in Spain. The project was announced back in June, this year.

The 12,500-square-metre facility currently has 14 operational charging ports. A phased expansion scheduled for completion in 2027 will bring the total to 50 high-power charging ports, supported by a secured 4 MW grid connection.

According to the companies, this would make MercaValencia one of Europe’s largest dedicated electric heavy-truck charging hubs once fully developed.

The site also provides dedicated parking and charging areas for heavy trucks, renewable electricity and PragmaCharge’s dynamic charging management software.

Electric trucks already using the Valencia hub

The facility is already being used by electric heavy-duty vehicles operated by Spanish transport companies Logística Carosan-Transnugon and Grupo Torres, on routes connecting Valencia with Madrid as well as destinations in Castellón and Alicante.

The location is particularly relevant for freight transport. MercaValencia is a 500,000-square-metre agri-food logistics platform handling more than 500 truck movements per day, while its proximity to the Port of Valencia also makes the charging hub accessible to port-related operations.

Logística Carosan-Transnugon is using electric trucks in 24-hour operations, including mineral water transport between Chóvar and Silla as well as other regional and long-distance routes.

Grupo Torres, meanwhile, is charging electric trucks at the site for container movements between the Port of Valencia and customer locations.

“For a transport company like ours, electrification only works when we can use electric heavy trucks in day-to-day freight operations with confidence,” said Pablo Bordils, Managing Director of Logística Carosan-Transnugon–On Route. “The MercaValencia hub gives us that confidence by providing charging certainty in the right location and connected to the routes we run.”

The facility was developed and is owned by Prologis around PragmaCharge’s fleet and charging requirements, while PragmaCharge operates the hub as part of its Electric Trucking-as-a-Service platform.

The model combines access to electric trucks with charging infrastructure, software and operational support for fleet customers. The MercaValencia facility is also designed to accommodate wider heavy-duty charging demand in the Valencia region as additional capacity comes online.

The project is also consistent with the Port Authority of Valencia’s plan to achieve carbon neutrality across its facilities in València, Sagunt and Gandia by 2035.
