Battery manufacturer Proterra announced that its industry-leading Onyx battery platform will be available with a U.S. cell option, with shipments beginning in Q1 2027. In response to a shifting geopolitical and policy environment, North American OEMs are demanding greater domestic content.

Proterra’s Onyx modular battery platform delivers the performance commercial vehicle and heavy-duty equipment OEMs depend on, including high energy density, proven durability, and an advanced safety architecture. Proterra’s decision to expand the Onyx platform to include a U.S. cell option addresses growing OEM demand for battery solutions with stronger domestic content and supply assurance.

Proterra is strengthening a U.S.-anchored supply chain through investments like the U.S. cell option and other strategic sourcing initiatives.

Taking orders now, with availability in Q1 2027, Proterra’s broader onshoring effort, anchored by U.S. cell, will increase American content by over 600%. This is a significant milestone that builds directly on the company’s U.S. footprint, including our technology center in Burlingame, CA, and battery manufacturing facility in Greer, SC.

“The market is asking for greater supply chain certainty and stronger domestic content. We’re answering. This investment ensures we can deliver both while continuing to lead in performance and safety”, stated Chris Bailey, CEO, Proterra.
