Volkswagen confirms all-electric Amarok for next-generation pickup

Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles has confirmed that the next-generation Amarok will be offered as a fully electric pickup, marking a major step in the brand's electrification strategy. The new model is expected to arrive towards the end of the decade alongside internal combustion and plug-in hybrid variants.

Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles has confirmed that the third-generation Amarok will be available as a battery-electric vehicle (BEV), ending months of speculation about the future of the brand’s pickup.

The confirmation came from VW Commercial Vehicles CEO Stefan Mecha, who revealed that the next Amarok will include a fully electric version as part of a broader powertrain lineup. According to reports by Australian publication Chasing Cars, cited by Electrive, the new generation is expected to debut around 2029 or 2030 and will also be offered with internal combustion engines and plug-in hybrid powertrains.

New full electric Volkswagen Amarok?

Volkswagen has not yet disclosed technical details or confirmed the platform that will underpin the electric pickup. Previous reports have suggested several options were under consideration, including a dedicated electric architecture or a new partnership similar to the current collaboration with Ford for the existing Amarok.

The announcement nevertheless represents Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles’ clearest commitment so far to an electric Amarok. As demand for zero-emission commercial vehicles expands beyond vans into the pickup segment, manufacturers are increasingly preparing battery-electric alternatives for customers requiring both payload capability and off-road performance.
