For the first time in Italy, Volvo Trucks put on display the new electric heavy-duty range within the Electric Commercial Days. Seven events were held in compliance with Covid-19 safety measures at the facility located near Bergamo, in Lombardy, from 14 to 25 June.

By trying out the Volvo FL Electric on the road, visitors were able to verify its drivability and experience the silence of a heavy vehicle completely free of vibration and noise. In the interests of road safety, the Gothenburg-based manufacturer has added unique sounds to warn other road users of the vehicle’s presence.

Volvo Trucks and the full electric range

With two models already on the market and three due to go into production in the second half of 2022, Volvo Trucks is getting prepared for the future of electrification (here is our report on the creation of a valuable network of partners all over the world). In addition to the medium-duty Volvo FL and FE, which are mainly used for waste collection and distribution, the range of electric vehicles will also include the new FH, FM and FMX, ready to be ordered. Production of the new electric models for Europe will start in the second half of 2022.

With the addition of the new products with higher load capacities, more powerful drivelines and range of up to 300 km, Volvo Trucks’ electric portfolio could cover – according to the manufacturer – around 45 percent of all current goods transported in Europe today. This makes it possible to make an important contribution to lower the climate impact from road freights, which according to official statistics account for about 6 percent of total CO2 emissions in the EU.

The present is electric

«Volvo Trucks is the player that has accelerated the energy transition more than anyone else and today holds a decisive leadership position in the European electric market», said Giovanni Dattoli, Managing Director for the Italian market. Volvo Trucks is indeed a pioneer in electric mobility, backed by the Group’s decades of experience, driven by Volvo Buses with over 4,000 electric vehicles circulating worldwide.

While the focus for long-haul heavy-duty transport is already on future hydrogen fuel cell systems, the present is undoubtedly characterized by electric solutions. The current range of Volvo Trucks medium-duty vehicles provides the best solution for many of the customer’s transport needs, such as distribution, waste collection and hub-to-hub transport.
