According to reliable media reports, Chinese EV battery manufacturer CALB will soon build its very first gigafactory in Europe. The chosen country will be Portugal, precisely in the city of Sines, about 100 km south Lisbon.

The investment is expected to slightly overcome 2 billion dollars. The Chinese manufacturer aims to produce lithium batteries with a total annual capacity of 15 gigawatt hours, about 187,000 batteries more or less.

Why CALB chose Portugal for its first European gigafactory

Portugal takes advantage of some lithium deposits, thus making the whole supply chain smaller compared to other countries. In fact, the nation boosts some of the most significant lithium mines in the whole continent. According to the plans, the CALB gigafactory will start production by 2028.
