JUNA has passed the milestone of 100 electric trucks operating on European roads, as the joint venture between Scania and digital freight forwarder sennder continues to expand its Truck-as-a-Service model.

The fleet currently comprises around 110 battery-electric trucks across Germany, Italy, Poland and the Netherlands, with JUNA expecting that number to increase to approximately 150 vehicles by the end of 2026.

The milestone comes just over two years after the company’s first electric trucks entered operation. Since then, the JUNA fleet has covered around 3.9 million kilometres, including both international routes and shorter recurring shuttle operations.

Removing the upfront cost of electric trucks

Founded by Scania and sennder in 2023, JUNA is built around an Electric Truck-as-a-Service model rather than conventional vehicle ownership.

The company works with shippers and freight forwarders to identify routes suitable for electrification and then provides the carriers operating those routes with access to electric trucks, route and usage analysis, technical support and a flexible pay-per-use model.

The proposition is intended to address one of the main barriers to electric truck adoption: the significantly higher initial investment compared with diesel vehicles. According to JUNA, electric trucks can currently cost between two and three times as much as comparable diesel models, while around 70% of Europe’s trucks are operated by carriers with fewer than ten vehicles.

By separating use of the vehicle from its purchase or financing, JUNA aims to make electrification accessible to smaller transport companies working as subcontractors for larger logistics operators.

The company’s current offer is based on Scania battery-electric trucks and combines the vehicle with maintenance, insurance, digital services and support with route analysis and charging. JUNA currently lists vehicles with a 624 kWh installed battery capacity, up to 350 km of range at 40 tonnes and charging power of up to 375 kW.

From Nestlé to DHL Freight

JUNA’s model is already being used in transport networks operated for major European companies. The company mentions Nestlé among its partners and supports regional logistics operations for Beiersdorf in Hamburg.

Another significant deployment announced during IAA Transportation involves DHL Freight and German transport company Pflaum. Under DHL’s Partner Store programme, Pflaum will gain access to 20 JUNA electric trucks under a five-year agreement, without having to make the vehicle investment itself. The trucks will complement 45 battery-electric vehicles already operated by Pflaum.

“By combining route analysis, technical expertise and a flexible commercial model, we are helping carriers of all sizes integrate electric trucks into their everyday operations,” said Matteo Oberto, Managing Director and CEO of JUNA.
